Boil Water Issues In My Hometown. An Appt with Melody.
Last Monday, I can't believe no one in my hometown informs me as if I am being deaf who can't answering the phone that the boil water has been issued that afternoon. I heard the lightning struck a water plant in Ormond Beach on 5 o'clock TV news. Mom confused me by what's going on in my hometown when she videophoned me thru an interpreter. I don't want to hear about the boil water issues. I called Mom twice about it. The last one was that my parents think it's not in our area. My parents asked me if I have to check the water if it is pressuring. I replied yes. It means no dirty and looking clear. Mom said I don't have to worry about it. LOL! I told her I am not. I feel healthy since then. I heard on the TV news that so many residents in our area wanted to pick up a package of free bottled water at an art performance center. The boil water issuses had been lifted yesterday. About deaf community, most deaf people are very confused by what's going on in their hometown when there is an emergency if they have no idea. 911 calls make to only hearing residents when there's a warning issue. I e-mailed my deaf friend in New Smyrna Beach about what happened in my hometown that Monday night. Anyways, I wish someone who is responsible taking care of our problematic situations so he or she informs Florida Governor Crist about our deaf community is doing it immediately, not for a year or 2. We are waiting for a green light from our governor if someone have an idea about how to set up an emergency for all of deaf residents.
I went to see Melody last Tuesday afternoon for my appt. Melody wanted me to pick which level of sounds is the best and then started to play a harp again for about 15 minutes. As Melody continued to play a harp, I feel I am getting a vibe in a progress. The vibe went through my feet, legs, and then to in both sides of my head. Wow! I felt my right knee is acting up like a shake. After the harp was finished, Melody showed ASL in an alphabet order with her left hand to me. Nice try. Then I learned how to correct a pronounce of word. It was a difficult. And then Mom’s turn.
Oh boy that's a huge problem and the Florida state government needs to address it right away! It's just not acceptable to issue emergency calls for hearing people only, how difficult would it be to send out an emergency call on TTY? My guess is it wouldn't be hard at all--somebody simply needs to do it.
ReplyDeleteIs Melody going to learn ASL words, not just finger spelling? There's a lot of good books and dictionaries out there, she would probably need to learn just a few words. At my old job I learned words pertaining to art, food, and emergencies pretty quickly. I'm not fluent in ASL but at least I was able to do my job with my deaf clients as well as with my hearing clients.
When I got a response an e-mail back from my deaf friend in NSB the next day, she said she will have to talk with people about this problematic and thanked me for bringing this up to her again. The first time last year was about a dangerous hazard that was spreaded all over my hometown but it turned out it's a mistake. It confused all of hearing and deaf residents. Deaf people and I didn't know what's going on when 911 emergency called to warn all of us about the hazard and wanted us to close windows right away. I found out about it on a local TV news later that late afternoon. I e-mailed NSB deaf woman about it when I found out she and other deaf people were having a meeting with someone who works for government last March but I did not go to that meeting cuz I was sick at that time.
ReplyDeleteMelody is going to learn finger spelling. Yeah, I will suggest Melody that she needs to read and study ASL books if she wants to.
