In The Memory of Uncle Richard 2nd of Part 3

On Thanksgiving week 1996, Mom, Joe, Dee, Joe’s old girlfriend, and Todd, my then boyfriend, and I went on a trip to Stinson Beach.  Richard and Joan (see the photo on the right) invited us there for a holiday dinner at the home of famous musician named Jerry Garica.  Uncle Richard rented there.  It has a tennis court, Jacuzzi, and a swimming pool and a guest house.  Wow!  We had a delicious dinner.  We had a wonderful time all afternoon.

I just learned Richard was a celebrity for a short time as a young Boy Scout in 1945.  I didn’t know that.  My Dad didn’t mentioning it to me until Uncle Richard told me about it.  There was a picture of Richard in the newspaper.  In that newspaper, it shows a picture of Richard helping an old lady who was about fainting during the funeral of FDR.  Richard was living in Washington, D.C. with his family at that time while his mother was living in Florida with my Dad as a young boy.  Wow, that’s interesting.  Few times, I can’t find a picture of Richard at the funeral of FDR online.  It was difficult.  I can’t pay it.  I believe it was in late April 1945.  Recently, I found out where the picture of Richard is located when I asked for.  I was told in an email that the location of his picture is at the site of FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Cool.  One day when I go back to Washington, D.C. on my vacation, I will visit the building of FDR Memorial and find the picture so I can take a digital photo of it.  Someone will send that picture to me when he or she did take a great picture there later so I will put that picture in my blog in the future.

Richard was born and grew up in Washington, D.C.  He was a baseball player as a young boy.  And a Boy Scout.  Richard was graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C.  He was an editor at The Washington Daily News, The Evening Star, and Aviation Week and Space Technology Magazine during his journalism career of four decades.  In 1965, Richard moved his family to San Francisco when he was promoted to become a bureau chief for the magazine until his retirement in the early 2000s.  Richard has children and stepchildren.

Richard enjoyed his hobbies.  His hobbies are tennis, snorkeling, ping pong, and travel.

Richard spent on so many vacations over the years since his retirement.  He went to Hawaii, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Florida, Death Valley, Arizona, New Mexico, Africa, and Nevada.  He had been to China during his editing career before.

About 3 months ago, I sent an e-mail of slideshow to Richard and Jack about a 100th anniversary of my high school, Seabreeze.  I am so glad that Uncle Richard had a chance to look up a slideshow of high school class reunion on time.  Thank God!

I have received nice gifts in the mail from Uncle Richard and his wife, Joan, few times.  A beautiful Hawaiian sundress (see the photo on the right.  Taken at a Mexican restaurant on July 1, 2003) and a real shell necklace that he bought in Hawaii for me on his vacation with Joan in 2003.  He sent a mail package of them to me when he returned home.  I love that sundress very much.  I wore that sundress again on Friday July 18th in honor of Richard. A coffee mug and a book (see the photo below) as a Christmas gift 2003 from Muir Woods where he currently worked a part-time job.
